Description
In honor of Berkeley Breathed resuming work on his signature comic strip, 'Bloom County', I've revamped one of my older 'pardoy week' Bill and Melvin comic strips which took a gentle swipe at the shifting appearance of their main character, Opus the Penguin.
My hopes for Bloom County now that it's back?
I hope Breathed takes it back to it's roots. In the early 80s, when the strip was funniest, it poked fun at current events. Then it gradually became an unfunny, 'Mary Worth' style soap opera about Opus' love life with Lola Granola. Breathed needs to move away from making every strip about Opus. He's a fine character, but like sugar, too much of him can make you gag. Bloom County had lots of other characters who were just as funny, or funnier, than Opus.
He should put Milo Bloom back at the Picayune in his role as sting journalist. They should bring back Bobbi Harlowe and Cutter John and make them regulars again. They should bring back Senator Bedfellow, Binkley's dad, and all the other core characters they had at the strip's beginnings. If he does that, and keeps away from making it 'all Opus, all the time', then he's gold. In terms of current events, he's got PLENTY to work with....

Bloom County was one of the all time greats. And I do agree with you that when it started being the Opus show, I lost interest. Outland had a few moments but never recaptured the heart that was evident in BC.
Your comic here reminded me of a series of strips where Binkley decided to tell everyone "the truth." His comment to Opus was "You look more like a puffin than a Penguin." I have no idea why that stuck with me for twenty-odd years.
